Frequently Asked Questions
How do I change the AI difficulty?
Tap the "Settings" button on the home screen, then select your preferred difficulty under "AI Difficulty". Choose from Easy, Medium, Hard, or Expert.
Can I play as Black?
Yes! Go to Settings and under "Play As", select Black. The AI will make the first move as White.
How do I undo a move?
During a game, tap the "Undo" button at the bottom of the screen. In vs Computer mode, this will undo both your move and the AI's response.
How does pawn promotion work?
When your pawn reaches the opposite end of the board, a dialog will appear letting you choose which piece to promote to: Queen, Rook, Bishop, or Knight.
How do I enable the game timer?
Go to Settings and toggle on "10 Minute Timer". Each player will have 10 minutes on their clock. If time runs out, that player loses.
What does the Expert AI level do?
Expert mode uses a 4-ply deep search with alpha-beta pruning, quiescence search, and piece-square evaluation tables. It provides a significant challenge for experienced players.
Does the app work offline?
Yes! Chess - 2026 works fully offline. An internet connection is only needed for displaying advertisements.
How do I flip the board?
Tap the "Flip" button (â) at the bottom of the game screen to rotate the board 180°.
Troubleshooting
App crashes or freezes
If the app crashes or freezes, try the following:
1. Force close the app and reopen it
2. Restart your device
3. Make sure your OS is up to date
4. Reinstall the app if the issue persists
AI takes too long to move
On Expert difficulty, the AI performs a deep search which may take a few seconds on older devices. If it takes too long, try reducing the difficulty to Hard or Medium.
